Martha Peace on anger

I was perusing the internet tonight and came across Martha Peace's website.  She is the author of one of my all-time favorite books, The Excellent Wife.  As I was reading through the question and answer pages, I came across this and felt that it was very pertinent for me, and wanted to be able to refer to it regularly.  I hope it helps you too.

Q:  Sometimes I go into angry rages especially when my children are acting up.  I always feel guilty and apologize, but it keeps happening.  Is there anything that can help?

A:  Angry rages are a deed of the flesh (Gal. 5:20).  They are sin. That is the bad news.  The good news is that with God's enabling grace, you can repent.  Sinful anger is almost always a habit and will only be changed by thinking kind, tender-hearted thoughts instead of angry thoughts (Eph. 4:31-32).  For example, instead of thinking “That makes me so mad!”, you ought to think, “My child is sinning.  How can I overcome evil with good?” (Rom. 12:21).  Then come up with a plan of action based on biblical principles.  Work hard at this.  Pray for repentance.  Confess the sin of anger right when it begins, when you first begin to feel irritated or frustrated. Humbly ask for God's forgiveness and your child's forgiveness.  You do not have to stay an angry person because “if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.” (2 Cor. 5:20).

Spunky’s Great Giveaway!

Spunky is giving away a Benz Microscope and Apologia Biology Set this week. Click Here to get the details.

I have recently discovered Spunky's blog, and have SO enjoyed it!  We definitely have the same views when it comes to educating our children

I have been looking into using Jeannie Fulbright's Exploring Creation series with the kids next year anyway.  They just LOVE science, and we had so much fun when we did the unit study together, that I thought this would be the perfect combination for us to try, while not having all of the subjects on my shoulders.  Another microscope for our school room would be awesome too, as one just doesn't seem to cut it with four kids angling to see the “cool” thing going on under the scope.

Anyway, I just wanted to let you all know about her giveaway!

Schooling opinion

I wrote this in response to a question posted on a forum that I frequently read:

Because I don't trust my own words, I will give you some scripture to consider:

Matthew 7:6-11

6 Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.

7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:

8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

9 Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone?

10 Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?

11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?

My children are certainly my pearls, and as the previous post says, I will not render my children unto “Caesar.”  I also believe that this verse is telling us that God *will* supply our needs, especially when it comes to His little children.

People make choices.  I know of several families who hardly have any money, yet they CHOOSE for the mother to stay home and homeschool the children.  They do without two vehicles, a fancy house, cable television, etc.  They CHOOSE what is important to them!

It is not the government's business to educate our children.  EVER!  God has given that responsibility to us as parents.

6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:

7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

8 And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.

9 And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.

How can this be accomplished when the children are sitting in a public school room where none of this is allowed.

Proverbs 22:6
6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

The commentary of this verse says: Train children, not in the way they would go, that of their corrupt hearts, but in the way they should go; in which, if you love them, you would have them go. As soon as possible every child should be led to the knowledge of the Saviour.

When the children are gone to PS for so much of the day, where is the training taking place?  I have a friend who puts her kids on the bus at 7am, they get off at 3pm, do homework, eat dinner, bathe, and go to bed by 7pm.  Where is the time for much training at home?  Most of the “training” is taking place at school.

One more little comment, then I will stop for now.  I took the kids to hear a lady who had gone to Africa with a missionary team.  She said that she couldn't believe that there was no public education!  She was amazed and shocked.  The only educational institutions were run by churches.  I believe this is as it should be.

If the PS system failed due to the Christians all pulling their children out, I believe that the demand for church schools would rise, and that the tuition would be lowered for those who want to hand over the responsibility of training their children to others, and we would see an amazing transformation in our nation.  Not to mention the fact that if we didn't have to pay so much in our taxes for education, everyone COULD afford to homeschool (not that it has to cost that much!), or send them to a Christian school.

I hope I haven't offended anyone, but have given you all something to think about.

Rental House search

We went to look at two rental houses last night.  The first one would definitely work, but then we went to see a house that one of my midwives owns.  Her dh is being sent to Mississippi for two years, so they are going to rent their house while they are gone, but plan to come back.  It is SO nice, especially compared with the one we saw first.  The first one has more room, but it is an older house, and dh isn't sure how well it will heat, and it is quite a bit farther out than the second one.  The second one has a pretty large garage which is nice too…can double as a playroom in the winter!

Anyway, they said they would rent for $1350 with a 2-year lease, but that doesn't really work for us.  I asked Jessica to see what her dh would rent it for a 1-yr lease and then month to month after that.  If it is $1450 or so, we'll wait for it.  It will be available in July.  Otherwise, we will probably go with the one out KGB.  The “office” is HUGE, but it smells like it was used as a dog wash (it was!).  If we do rent it, we will ask that they paint it and bleach the floors.  Hopefully that kills the smell.

Overall, I am with Inigo in Princess Bride, “I HATE waiting!”

Our littlest handsome man…

I was realizing the other night while I lay in my bed with my hands cupped around my ever expanding belly, feeling the little movements and squirms of the babe hidden within, that I haven't told all about the joy I take every night in doing this!  It is kind of like our own little secret playtime!  I rarely feel this little man move during the day, but in the evening when I crawl into bed, he is always there to comfort me and tell me that he is still there with me.  I love this part of being pregnant!

Eagles

On the way home from church yesterday, we saw a plethora of eagles!  One pair we saw was sitting way up in the top of a partly dead tree, and beneath them on the same tree you could see their enormous nest.  It is so nice to see them all coming back year after year to nest.  It means that spring really is coming, and the birds are beginning to start their nesting!

On Sherry's blog today, I found out about an eagle cam!  It is of a momma eagle sitting on her nest.  Pretty cool!  We have it saved as a shortcut on my desktop so we can keep an eye on her!

Today in history, we learned that Kublia Khan trained eagles to catch wolves!  Wow!  I had never heard of such a thing.  Wouldn't that be awesome to have a trained eagle!  I could trim the talons and have it watch the kids!  Woohoo!  HAHAHA!!!!!

The preliminary house plans

We designed the house we are currently in, and the new one is pretty similar to this one, but the draftsman tweaked a few things and made it really nice!  One drawback I have with his plans is he changed my big pantry that I had!  He said it was too long and narrow.  The new one is not really any bigger than what I have now, which is not nearly enough, but a lot of it is used up with paper towels, kleenex, muffin tins, griddle, serving dishes, etc.  I will have a finished kitchen in the new house though, so I will have a lot more cupboard space, and he put in a linen closet next to the pantry that I will probably mostly use for pantry space, so I guess it will all work out.

The entryway is pretty awesome though!  He has some nice big windows in it, as well as the staircase going off to the right, and then a small landing, and up into the house.  It will be so nice to have all of the stairs inside!

The master bathroom is fabulous, with a corner spa tub, double-headed shower,  double vanity, and toilet, and there are three rows of glass block windows!  He also changed my one walk-in closet in our bedroom to two – his and hers (and mine is much bigger, btw!)

Anyway, over all, we like the plans.  A few things have to be changed, such as the roofline, the door to the eventual garage, and a few windows, but overall, we are really happy!  Yea!

CHCHC Update ~ Entryway finished!

I finally finished the entryway!  I didn't even want to really start on the livingroom, as the cleanliness of the livingroom is really dependent on the entryway.  The livingroom is usually kept picked up, except for the occasional forts, toys, and mounds of laundry needing folding.  So, I really focused on the entryway.

The entryway is where everything gets piled up that needs to go out to the storage container, needs to go to other people, and needs to be gotten rid of, as well as house all of the gear needed for 7 people.  During the winter, it is really crowded!  The kids each have their own basket for hats, gloves, scarves, etc, and the snowpants go in the bench.  The other “clutter I run into in the winter is everyone having multiple coats.  They need one for when it is really cold (below 0!), as well as a lighter coat for when it is above 0, because the parkas get too hot.  So, the first thing I did was start washing all of the coats and snowpants.  I put all (except a set for the two youngest) of the hats, gloves, and scarves into a tote, and after the parkas were dry, I put those into the same tote.  It is marked winter gear so it will be easy to find next winter.  I rinsed off the snowboots and took them out to their designated tote out in the storage container, pulled out the shoe rack (which my 4yodd wiped down), vacuumed and mopped behind and under it, cleaned off the coat rack shelf (boy was it dusty!), took the storage things out, took the stuff to go to other people out the the tote in the van, washed the dog kennel bedding and cover, and even gave the dog a bath!

After!  Isn't it beautiful with the sun streaming in?!?

It has made such a magnificent difference!  When dh got home from being in town for two days he said, “WOW!  It looks really nice in here!”  My MIL came over for a little while and couldn't belive the difference!  Whee!  I really want to keep it this way.  So far, the van is still clean (it could probably use a vacuuming again though) and the porch is still clear.  The kids have a few sticks lying around, and the dog got into some insulation from under the house, but otherwise, things are staying clean!  I think I will finish up the livingroom today, and then maybe I will start on the kitchen….Actually, I think the kitchen will wait, as I have plenty I want to do to get ready for Resurrection Day.

On a more positive note…

Dh and I did meet with a draftsman to have our house plans drawn up last Sunday.  The preliminary drawings should be done this week!  I can't wait to see them!  We have always seen the layout, but it will be so exciting to see them all drawn up.  He had some really good ideas for different areas in the house, so it will look like REAL plans when he is finished.  Now I have a year to dream about things and decide what I like and might not like.

We have only thought about what the outside or roofline of the house would look like, so this way, dh and I will be on the same page with things instead of so much just being in our heads.  I am really looking forward to seeing them!

House plans update

I realized it has been a while since I wrote about the house plans.  Maybe it is because it is constantly changing!  It looks like now we will not be building on the new property this summer.  We are going to take the house we are in now, and move it up the road a little, putting in a well, septic, and foundation for it, and then either renting it or selling it.

We were going to have a contractor build a new house for us on the new property, but financially it just wouldn't be a good idea to try to do both projects in the same summer.  So…we will probably rent for a year in the lower valley, so we will have more space and dh will be able to come home every night that he is in Alaska.  This is becoming more of an issue, as he is out of state so much lately, that it is really hard to let him go for the couple of days he has to spend in town.  If he could at least be home every night that he is in-state, it wouldn't be so hard when he had to travel out of state for a week at a time.

Anyway, that's where we stand right now.  But, we have to get the house loan to finish this house through the bank before we can rent, so I need to get a bunch of bids from different companies for all of the things we need to finish.  It is a little overwhelming to me, as I don't really know what to ask them to bid.  Dh says he will be available, but he is just SO busy, I hate to bug him about something else.

I am really praying for God's strength and wisdom.  I am tired mentally.
